Concept Albums

Unread post by Otis_Firefly »

Pretty interesting article...

http://paralleluniverse.msn.com/photos/ ... ?GT1=28140

My personal faves from the article include:

Sgt. Peppers - by the most creative Juggernauts of all time and an incredible, compelling testament to that idea was this album.

The Rise and Fall Ziggy Stardust - genius album by a genius performer. Bowie was busy that year with the release of two other full albums; A Man and His Music & The Man Who Sold The World. I question whether or not all three albums are linked. But I've never seen any other evidence that would support that notion.

Darkside and of course The Wall - two of the greatest albums of all time in my opinion.

Operation Mindcrime I - II didn't quite live up to the compelling performance/conception of the fist one.

Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness - I had no idea this was a concept album - it's review here is pretty brutal for an album that contained so many great musical moments. Of course nothing could compaire to Gish abd stardom definitely affected Corgan adversely, but still a great band.

If anyone has other faves they recommend post em' here please - I love this kind of stuff.

The Beatles defiantly influenced me, also Led Zeppelin can be heard over and over. I think Black Sabbath also. I think that was the first time people started hearing darker music.
I killed a six-pack just to watch it die.
Without question the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you the wheel was also a fine invention, but a wheel does not go as well with pizza.

Green Day's American Idiot is an AWESOME album. Every song is well written, and frankly, stretching Billy Joe's talent to the max. You WILL be humming a song from this one after you listen to it.

Fear Factory-Demanufacture
Fear Factory-Obsolete

About how man has become desensitized to violence and machines may be the death of us all. As man turns more to machines to become immortal he becomes inhuman. Anyone rebelling against the machineswill be hunted down. Obsolete is more the concept album, but lots of the songs on Demanufacture are related to it. 2 of my favorite albums. Theme actually continues on 2 of the later albums Digimortal, and Archtype.

The label had the actual video before, but youtube raped it away from them because they wouldn't give it to itunes... The video for resurrection explains it a lot.

Iced Earth-The Glorious Burden
About the civil war.
Iced Earth-Something Wicked This Way Comes. Awesome album, about the apocalypse.
Actually almost all their albums are themed. The 2 I mention have different singers, the original guy was gone for a couple albums and now has come back.

Probably over 1/3 the albums I have are themed, heavy bands seem to like writing stories with their music.

Wow - Thanks Evil, I will definitely check these out.

Jarg - I was wondering about that Green Day album. I used to love Dookie and Kerplunk. However Nimrod and Insomniac sounded a bit too over produced for a punk band to me and I kind-of got Green Day Shell Shock. I'll check it though, thanks!

Cyg - Rush is great but I've never heard these albums. my Rush experience is limited to Moving Pictures and Grace Under Pressure. I understand that 2112 was some kind of masterpiece - I'll check it out.

Thanks Guys!

Janes Addiction XXX is by far one of my favorite creations of all times. Of course Dark side of the moon and The Doors An American Prayer are in my top 5. The Misfits American Psycho album is one of the best, I will never get sick of playing it over and over. FIEND for life!!

You may not like this one then as I think Green Day really went in a new, different direction. Not as much punk as a variety of different styles. The production is high so be warned. Still, one of my favorite albums to drive to.

Yeah - I don't think XXX or American Psycho were concept albums - but great albums none the less. And American Prayer is also an amazing work. I truly wish that Morrison was still around - shit for that matter Cobain, Hendrix, Stevie Ray and Staley too. All missed very much!

All three albums are connected somewhat.
2112 was the first concept album followed by A Farewell to Kings and then Hemispheres.
The first half of each album is the story with individual tracks on the other half.
Here's a link to their website and you can check out the track titles on their discography.
